Case study / 06
Geothermal feasibility study — Reno VAMC.
The VA contracted with Alares to assess the geothermal potential beneath the Reno VAMC property. Previous studies suggested resources from the Moana Hot Springs might extend under the property — but no direct evidence existed.
Background
The goal was to determine the feasibility of direct-use geothermal heating for the VAMC through a comprehensive investigation, including test well installation and resource assessment.
Scope of work
Alares provided end-to-end project management — planning, permitting, testing and reporting — ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and local jurisdictional requirements.
1. Environmental Assessment (EA)
- Comprehensive Environmental Assessment under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
- Direct, indirect and cumulative impacts addressed — hydrology, soil stability, air quality and ecosystems
- Concluded with a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), allowing the project to proceed
2. Permitting and regulatory coordination
Obtained all necessary permits in collaboration with:
- Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
- Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP)
- Nevada Division of Minerals (NDOM)
- City of Reno Environmental Control
3. Geothermal test well design and installation
- Designed and installed a test well to a depth of 2,200 feet
- Advanced drilling techniques to preserve well integrity and obtain accurate subsurface data
4. Pump testing and thermal evaluation
- Static and dynamic thermal production testing
- Evaluated the well's production rate, thermal gradients and potential output
5. Project reporting and preliminary design
- Detailed reports — thermal testing findings, feasibility assessments and recommendations
- Preliminary design assessment for a potential geothermal heating system
Key outcomes
- Feasibility confirmed. Direct-use geothermal heating is a viable energy solution for the Reno VAMC.
- Regulatory success. All required permits and approvals secured under NEPA and other frameworks.
- Detailed data and recommendations. Comprehensive data and preliminary designs delivered to the VA.
- Environmental stewardship. Project objectives achieved while minimizing environmental impacts.
