Seismic compliance & structural reinforcement.
Alares led the evaluation and seismic compliance upgrade of the Boiler Plant Building at the East Orange VA campus, ensuring it met all current seismic codes and the VA Seismic Design Guide. Our team addressed both structural and non-structural components.
Scope of work
Key objectives
- Evaluate the existing building frame and non-structural components for seismic compliance
- Design upgrades to bring the building in line with applicable seismic codes and VA design guidelines
- Prepare detailed construction bid documents with bid alternatives
Innovative solutions and design
3D scanning and Revit modeling
Complete 3D laser scan of the building and its equipment created an accurate Revit model — ensuring precise documentation and coordination for design and construction.
Structural enhancements
- Buttress walls supported by piers reinforced the boiler plant for increased structural stability
- Structural steel reinforcements upgraded the roof to improve resilience
- All piping and conduits were seismically braced to prevent damage during seismic events
Challenges and solutions
Challenge. Installing a footing for the south wall of the boiler plant posed a unique challenge due to its proximity to the subsurface tunnel connecting the boiler plant to the main hospital.
Solution. Alares conducted a site visit and collaborated with the contractor to develop an innovative solution that avoided interference with the tunnel — completed without compromising hospital operations.
Key outcomes
- Seismic compliance achieved. Brought into full compliance with current seismic codes and VA design guidelines.
- Improved structural integrity. Buttress walls and roof upgrades significantly enhanced resilience.
- Efficient documentation. 3D scan and Revit model provided precise design documents.
- Seamless construction administration. On-site challenges resolved with minimal disruption.
